Pre production

The second story of the Changes trilogy was Duncan D Driftwoods' Heart of Plastic (working title: Cybermac), commissioned in scene breakdown and in full script form in a small council bulding in Sweden. The story would prove to be a very difficult one to write, as Charles Hawtrey, a companion introduced in Agent Oooh! and subsequently never seen again, would have to leave in this story, and the story had to have the return of several versions of the same foe. And another important event...

The story

The TARDIS lands on a field riddled with large holes. The Doctor, Sir Humphrey and Charles Hawtrey narrowly escape several falling bombs and find themselves in a tunnel that leads into a large metallic complex. Here, the Doctor and his companions are approached by Cybermen, which the Doctor identifies as CyberMondasians*. However, there is a raid, carried out by Cybermen of a different design (CyberTelosians) and the group find themselves split up during the ensuing battle.

Charles is recaptured by the CyberMondasians, and the Doctor taken by the CyberTelosians to their base. Sir Humphrey meanwhile escapes onto the planets' surface, and meets a group of humans, who are on a mission to destroy all the Cybermen on the planet.

The Doctor finds out from the CyberTelosian Controller that the planet is called Jistron. All Cybermen have come to Jistron in search of something buried in the rock that is sending out certain signals throughout the Universe. However, the Cybermen have by now become different warring factions, and all think that whatever is buried in the rock will help them to become the ultimate Cyberforce.

Charles meanwhile has been told the same information by some more members of the human guerilla party. He escapes along with the captured humans from the CyberMondasian HQ and they head for the centre of resistance.

Sir Humphrey has become the advisor to the humans' leader, Morak. The humans believe that whatever the Cybermen are searching for could be used against them. They intend to take over a nearby Cyber installation, which may contain information on the whereabouts of the "something".

The Doctor meanwhile decides that the Cybermen should be left to their own devices, and formulates a plan to find Sir Humphrey and Charles. However, he is then informed that he is to be converted into a Cyberman.

Charles and the escaped prisoners meet up with the main body of resistance, which is the party of which Humphrey is a member. The group lead a raid on a nearby outpost controlled by CyberNeomorphs. The place is successfully taken over, and they access a computer. This faction of Cybermen are the most advanced and have found out where the signal is emanating from. However, whilst communicating with other human resistance members around the immediate area, all other Cyber factions learn of the information as all radio signals are being monitored. Soon, every faction is sending it's armies to a sector of the planet, to claim the "something" beneath the ground that will grant them total power.

Sir Humphrey, Charles and the main resistance group head for the area in captured CyberNeomorph ships, and emerge onto a huge battlefield. All manner of Cybermen are destroying one another in an attempt to take over the area. However, the humans decide that they should use the battle as a diversion, and that they should drill under the ground and find the "something". A short battle ensues between them and a group of CyberNomads over a large drilling vehicle. The humans win, and drill towards the signal.

Meanwhile, the CyberTelosian Controller has formulated the same plan, and commences operation on drilling towards the signal as well.

The humans reach the source of the signal and find, within a cave, an abandoned TARDIS console. Nearby is a machine which reverts one of the men into a foetus when he touches it. Charles discovers a diary, written by a Time Lord who called himself "Morty", which contains an account on how the machine was made, and what few things were left to do on the machine to make it safe to use. The machine is a time manipulator. However, just as the human scientists start to work, the CyberTelosians break through. All humans scatter, but many are shot down by Cybermen.

Sir Humphrey, Charles and Morak run, and hide in a rocky alcove. They discuss what they should do, when suddenly a CyberTelosian appears. The humans attempt to fight it, but Charles is pushed down a ravine by the Cyberman. Sir Humphrey looks on in horror, and the Cyberman approaches him.

On the surface above, the battle is coming to an end. The ground is littered with dead Cybermen. A small group of CyberNeomorphs are suddenly blown to pieces by some CyberMondasians, who are in turn picked off by some early CyberFaction troops.

The CyberTelosians examine the machine, and the Controller wishes one particular Cyberman to conduct tests on it. The Cyberman is sent for.

Only a few scattered groups of Cybermen remain on the planet's surface.

The CyberTelosian sent for arrives and also examines the machine. It manages to fix the machine so that it is portable, and it's power can be directed. However, suddenly a wall explodes and some CyberMondasians appear through the hole. Another battle ensues, but the CyberMondasians are quickly dispatched by the time manipulator, turning them into primordial slime. However, a few CyberTelosians are also hit. One is reverted back into a humanoid. It is the Doctor.

Some humans meet in a cave and organise themselves to attack the Cybermen in the central chamber. Morak meets them just as they begin the attack. They head for the chamber, killing Cybermen on the way, and converge on the CyberTelosians. The Doctor watches the battle from a safe distance, whilst fiddling with the time manipulator. He then shoots down the remaining CyberTelosians. Morak meets and thanks him, and a messenger reports that all remaining Cybermen have left the planet. All the humans cheer and the Doctor gives a sad smile before moving off to find his companions. Morak follows, at a short distance.

Out in space, Cyberships leave the planet's atmosphere.

The Doctor wanders the rocky tunnels, musing to himself. He says to himself that what he and his two friends could do with is a nice holiday. However, he stops short in his tracks when he finds Sir Humphrey near a ravine.

Sir Humphrey is dead.

The Doctor falls to his knees, shocked. Morak talks to him, and tells him that a Cyberman killed both Charles and Sir Humphrey.

The Doctor realises that the Cyberman that killed them was himself. In a fit of rage and madness, he pushes Morak off the side of the ravine, and then falls to his knees, his mind broken.

And laughs.
